Cornhole Rules

Basic rules of cornhole, the backyard bean bag toss game for novices and amateurs including court layout.

If you wish to set up your own corn toss court, you will need an area a minimum of 10' wide and 40 feet in length for comfortable play.

  • Distance - The distance from Hole to Hole is 33'. The distance from the front edge of the board to the front edge of the opposing board is 27 feet.
  • Pitching Box and Foul Lines - The pitching box, where you will toss the bag from beside the cornhole board, is equal to an area that is 3 feet wide and 4' long. When pitching your cornhole bags, your last step is NOT permitted to cross, or go past, the front side of the cornhole board. If the bag was pitched and it is determined that there was a foul, that bag does not count and cannot be re-tossed.
  • Cornhole Board Dimensions - You will see many homemade boards not to specs and bags not up to weight.
  • The Deck - The Cornhole board deck or playing surface is to be 24" wide X 48" long. The playing surface (or deck) should be finish-sanded to a very smooth texture. There should be no blemishes in the wood surface that might disrupt or distort play. The playing surface can be painted with a high gloss latex paint or varnish. The surface should allow bags to slide when thrown, but not so slippery that bags slide back down the platform. The deck should also be made of a minimum of 1/2" thick plywood so there is no give when the bag hits the surface. This will also provide for a more stable unit because of the added weight over 3/8" plywood.
  • Rear Deck Height - When set up for play, the distance from the ground to the top edge of the rear of the board should be 12".
  • Front Lip Height - When set up for play, the distance from the ground to the top front edge of the playing surface should be between 3" - 4"
  • The Hole - The hole in the playing surface should be 6" in diameter. It should be located in the center of the board and the center of the hole should be exactly 9" from the top edge of the board.

TIP - If you will be setting up your cornhole boards on a hard surface such as concrete or asphalt, you may want to tack on 1/8" rubber pads to the bottom of the rear legs and front lip. This will absorb the shock when the bag hits the surface, keeping the board from moving around.

  • Cornhole Bag Specifications - Casual or non-sanctioned bags should be similar to pro specs but can be filled with approximately 15 to 16 oz of hard corn feed.
  • Size - Each bag is to be made from two  6" x 6" fabric squares with a nylon double stitched seam on all four sides.
  • Fill and Weight - Amateur or non-sanctioned bags should be filled with approximately 15 to 16 oz of hard corn feed.
